Built as the ninth elementary within the Waukee Community School District, Radiant elementary is organized with three smaller learning communities around a central core of music, arts, and media center. Each learning community contains core studios that share a flexible activity area providing students and staff the ability to maximize a variety of collaboration opportunities.

Student safety is of prime importance and addressed here through a secure main entry and careful separation of bus and parent traffic flow.  Creative site design allowed the parent drop off area to maximize the number of cars during drop off and pick up times.

The exterior and interior materials are durable and easy to maintain, and provide a unique identity to this neighborhood school.  A raised central core of the building provides an opportunity to introduce natural light into the hallways, creating additional space that invites collaboration.

Design Insight

Creating a collaborative environment that supports staff and gets kids excited about coming to school was a guiding principle behind the design.
