Waukee High School Academic Addition and Renovation

Waukee, Iowa

In conjunction with athletic and PE facility improvements, this academic wing addition and renovation increases the capacity of the Waukee High School from 1,200 students to 1,800.  22 new classrooms are organized around a glass enclosed library that enhances the public connection to the high school by opening up the building and bringing it in closer proximity to a major street. The library is a light-filled dynamic space that includes a mezzanine reading room.   The project successfully introduces more color and vibrancy to the school by means of updated finishes and a prominent gold wall that is visible from the exterior of the library,  penetrates through the addition and extends into the interior of the existing building.  In addition, major renovations were made to the commons and food service, teacher work spaces, and entrance canopies.

Fun Fact:  A staircase “light box” anchors the corner of the library and glows with colorful LED lights at night.
