Timber Ridge Elementary

Johnston, Iowa

Continued growth presented the need for Johnston to add another elementary school to the District. The school is organized around a wedge shaped central atrium which steps down the site through a series of stairs and ramps which provide accessibility. Parallel two-story classroom wings are situated to one side of the atrium and also follow the slope of the site. These wings each contain flexible resource areas for small and large group instruction. Common areas are positioned opposite the classroom wings providing direct access to these functions off the atrium and reducing student travel time. The atrium also serves to connect the separate parent and bus drives, enhancing overall site circulation and safety. Large expanses of glazing in both the atrium and academic areas bring natural light deep into the building and afford views to the wooded areas preserved on site.
