St. John's Episcopal Church

Ames, IA

“We’d like to see the present (1929) edifice preserved in its principal architectural characteristics, but we’d also like to see some external manifestation of a vibrant spirit in touch with youth, with contemporary architectural tastes, and with modern religious practices.” It was possible to respect the existing structure by using the same brick and stone materials in similar forms. Modern expression was achieved with open flexible spaces grouped around a central skylight atrium space. Large windows along Lincoln Way offered a vista of the ISU campus from the new Parish Hall as well as offering a passerby to glimpse a view of church events. A meditation garden was provided next to the chapel. New lighting and finishes helped brighten the old sanctuary and parish hall.
