Pella Madison Elementary

Pella, IA

When Webster Elementary no longer met the district’s and community’s needs, the School Board closed it and built Madison Elementary. The 83,000 square foot facility is home to Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students. Classrooms are spacious, climate-controlled and outfitted with electrical connections for today’s educational technology. Gymnasium, cafeteria, administrative and educational areas are arranged off a curving circulation spine with abundant daylighting at key nodes. A large, centrally located media center features a sloping ceiling with a unique skylight to deliver dramatic daylighting. Keeping energy in mind, the district selected a geothermal mechanical system. The district’s boldest choice was to cover this building with a custom sheet metal roof. The result is an attractive display of sloping building volumes that wind around the structure’s circulation path.
