Johnston High School

Johnston, Iowa

The Johnston Community School District chose to continue their long-established working relationship with frk architects + engineers when they determined a new high school was needed to address a projected increase in student enrollment.  As a creative means of bringing new ideas to the project, frk invited Perkins + Will, internationally recognized for their educational design work, to be the consulting design firm for this project.  As part of the process the district completed a thorough and enlightening design process that engaged faculty, students, parents, community leaders, administration, and design professionals. Numerous workshops, design review sessions, and public meetings were held to garner as much information as possible.  The outcome of this intensive design process was a facility that is sustainable in design, flexible, technologically advanced, light-filled and well-appointed with collaborative spaces, and above all, a safe and secure place for students.
