Iowa Lakes Community College wished to expand its existing college library as well as add a new fitness center. In addition, the city of Emmetsburg had outgrown its public library facility. The college and the city decided to undertake a joint venture in order to accomplish their various needs. A central lobby connects the new facility to the existing college buildings. To one side of the lobby is located the fitness center containing a gymnasium, pool, locker rooms, racquetball court, weight room and fitness rooms. Opposite this is the combined college and public library. A community room, senior citizens area and ICN classrooms are included; all with after-hours access. The combined facility provides a focal point within the community which effectively serves both the college and the public.
