IHCC Oak Hall Student Residence

Ottumwa, Iowa

The design of a new dormitory at Indian Hills Community College addressed many challenges: awkward site geography, integration with existing forestry, and connection with the growing campus community. The traditional college dormitory focuses inward, with common spaces and circulation buried inside. The main circulation spine is drawn to the front, mirroring the road that passes by and that serves as the main artery to the rest of campus. The glass curtain wall façade provides the common areas with beautiful views to the campus, and by night the illuminated interior serves as a beacon to the students who call the building home. The unique use of materials allows the dorm to provide its own presence on campus while recalling the architectural character of the campus.
