St. Augustin's School, a private parochial school in the Des Moines Catholic Diocese, determined in 1995 that the existing 70 year old facility needed to be updated in order to remain competitive with public schools in Des Moines, and to position itself to continue to provide a quality education experience for grades K-8 into the next century.

Preliminary studies showed a new facility would be more cost effective in the long run than major remodeling. Four existing classrooms were retained and remodeled for pre-school, kindergarten, and first grade. New construction provides second through fifth grades on the main level, along with an art room and large media center. The middle school with grades 6, 7, and 8 is on the upper level along with state-of-the-art science and computer labs. Each classroom contains a television monitor and data cabling for access to the media retrieval system and computer network. The building is also set up for future fiberoptic cable and ICN classrooms.

A separate area on the main level provides a gymnasium/cafeteria/music room complex with movable partitions to open the raised music room to the gymnasium or cafeteria for small or large performances.
