A master plan was developed for the First Lutheran Church to allow for two phases in the renovation and addition project. The first phase addressed the need to remodel the sanctuary and add air conditioning equipment. The second phase addressed the issue of accessibility with an addition that included a new entrance.

The old sanctuary had been altered over the years. In the first phase, the new design simplified the appearance of the sanctuary, restoring the character of the original arches. A new vaulted ceiling incorporates the new mechanical system and lighting without distracting from the architecture of the space. Existing plaster walls were patched. New chancel furniture including the communion railing, altar, lectern, and baptismal font were designed to reflect the arches of the church. The chancel was also designed for a large hanging tapestry. The character of the space changed dramatically from a cluttered dark room to a light, simple sanctuary.

In the second phase, an addition was constructed to provide a new entry at ground level. A carport canopy permits easy access on the tight site. A new elevator allows the elderly and people with handicaps to access all three levels of the building. The addition also includes restrooms and space for storage of choir robes. The exterior of the addition has a brick and stone design with piers and parapet walls, intended to harmonize with the existing structure. The windows were also designed to repeat the gothic arch pattern of the original building.
