The site required extensive grading, dewatering, and waterproofing construction design for most of the building, including the gymnasium with a wood floor. On the exterior a generous skylight signals where the main entrance is on a large scale while at the same time providing a smaller scale design around the doorways bringing the children inside. The colorful main lobby areas carries through the same motif and major rooms and building wings are visible from the front entry area.
In 1999, classroom additions were completed converting Riverdale Heights into a fully-functional 4-section elementary. This building is a good example of how a school district can affordably build for immediate needs while keeping in mind the needs of the future.
