Explosive growth in the Johnston School District required a large, new elementary school, but this building scales the project to child-size with six learning communities.

Each learning community accommodates a grade (K-5) and contains 4 to 5 classrooms situated around a common resource area. This resource area is intended to serve many differing functions from informal student gatherings to providing computer access for an entire class.

Each classroom contains a television monitor and data drops for efficient access to the building's media retrieval system. The centrally located media center forms the hub of this network. An intimate story telling area provides a small space for the students' imaginations to run with a story or film.

The gymnasium, music rooms and dining facilities are set apart from the communities to provide a quiet learning environment. The gymnasium employs folding walls to accommodate small performances, phys-ed classes and cafeteria facilities.
