The town of Atlantic has always taken great pride in its turn-of-the-century Carnegie library. When it came time to expand the overcrowded library in the mid-1990s, they faced a difficult challenge in creating an addition that respected the history of the existing building while also providing ample room for modern services and adding a contemporary design feel.

After the city received a Historic Preservation Grant to help fund the expansion, the design and construction process began in earnest. FRK worked closely with the owner and the State Historical Society to ensure that the challenges and requirements of the historic preservation process were carefully met.

The addition triples the total area of the library as it wraps around the sides and back of the original building, leaving the main facade untouched. The exterior design harmonizes with the original structure without copying it, while the original brick walls are exposed inside.

The new entry is a two-story atrium with easy access to meeting rooms, stairs, and a new elevator. The interior of the original building was restored with new finishes and light fixtures. Fireplaces are featured in comfortable reading rooms. New technology such as fiber optic networking was integrated throughout the structure.
