The Farner-Bocken Company hired Frevert-Ramsey-Kobes to design a 47,000 SF expansion of their existing freezer and warehouse facility in Carroll, Iowa. The new addition, which was completed in 2001 for just under $2.5 million, is on the west side of their existing facility with a footprint of 190' by 247'. Part of the new addition consisted of expansion of their +40 degree dock, shipping, and receiving area. Four additional truck dock bays were cut into the existing building wall, and future spots for additional truck bays were also planned for the new addition. The coolers were expanded, including a 34 degree dairy/deli cooler, a 34 degree wet and dry cooler, and a 60 degree dry cooler. Farner-Bocken is one of the Midwest's leading convenience store suppliers, and these coolers are used for their food distribution system and warehousing. Also included in the addition is a large -10 degree freezer and 20 degree freezer areas for their increased ice cream and frozen dairy product distribution.

The overall exterior look of the building matched the existing building complex in size and color of wall panels, metal trim, and detailing. The exterior and interior walls of this facility are 3" and 5" insulated metal panels. The clear ceiling space is 25' for pallet storage and the industrial racking system.

Unique products used in this installation included high-speed roll-up doors for environmental seperations and quick travel through the different coolers and freezers, and a superflat concrete flooring system for the high speed forklift traffic.

The mechanical equipment is installed on a large structural grid in a central location on the roof, with condensing units and humidifiers located in the individual spaces. Special mechanical and electrical considerations consisted of a sprinkler system, occupancy sensors for lighting controls, and lightning protection for the building equipment and structural frame.
