In the mid 1990s, Krause Gentle Corporation asked FRK to design a 'prototype store' for their Kum & Go convenience store chain. However, after the prototype was complete, Krause Gentle realized that they would prefer to have each of their stores be unique, offering different services, partnering with other businesses, and reaching out to the local community through diverse, customer-oriented designs. Only 3 stores were ever built following the 'prototype' plan.

Since then, FRK has worked with Krause Gentle to design over 40 Kum & Go locations across Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Colorado. While these stores all share a similar concept, each has been designed to fit their particular site and to adapt to local surroundings. For example, many of the Kum & Go stores in Colorado make use of heavy timber structures, instead of brick or concrete, in order to better respect the architecture of the region.

Overall this portfolio of stores across the midwest represents an exciting variety of design approaches to the classic convenience store motif.
